Living in Tsukuba
Tsukuba municipal city prepares the booklet “Tips for Living in Tsukuba! (English, 中文, 한국어, Tiếng Việt Nam, Bahasa Indonesia, ภาษาไทย, PORTUGUÊS, Español)” which is a guide book for foreign residences. You can get the booklet at Tsukuba City Hall near Kenkyu-gakuen Station.
Search for a Doctor
The Medical Information Net (NAVII), operated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and prefectural governments, allows you to search for medical institutions and pharmacies nationwide.
Tsukuba Municipal City homepage for Foreigner
Let’s go to the top page of Multilingual Services at Tsukuba City HP. Then click “English, 中文, 한국어 or やさしい日本語”, you can see the Homepage which are translated to your favorite language. The translation is not perfect; however, it might be enough for you to understand the essence of the HP.
Ibaraki Prefecture Government

Tsukuba International Association
TIA hold Japanese conversation classes for the foreign residents of Tsukuba and their families (the course is also available for people who work at Tsukuba). TIA registered volunteer 'Daily Life Supporters' provide advice and assistance with small problems and difficulties in your everyday life.
Tsukuba International School Tuition Assistance Program
Tsukuba International School has a cooperative agreement with Tsukuba Science City Network. International researchers who work for research institutes and universities that belong to the Tsukuba Science City Network can benefit from reduced tuition fees. This is the school’s way of contributing to an environment that allows research institutes in Tsukuba to invite top level researchers from abroad to come to Tsukuba.
Conditions
- One or both parents work as a researcher at a research institute or university affiliated with Tsukuba Science City Network
- One or both parents are non-Japanese
- Both parents’ (gross) salary combined does not exceed 8,000,000 yen per year
Application Procedure
- Applicants must apply through their research institute or university.
- The research institute/university contacts Tsukuba International School to discuss the application.
- The research institute/university issues a statement of employment (including the job title and the length of the contract) and a statement of salary.

Our tuition rates will increase from September 2028 to June 2029.
In addition, international researchers whose contracts are very short (under 12 months) may apply to have the registration fee waived.
JSPS Post-Doctoral Fellows are entitled to slightly different terms. Please contact the school for details.
