Tsukuba Science City was established as a national project to create a hub for high-level research and education and to alleviate overcrowding in Tokyo, by systematically relocating national research and examination institutions. Currently, 29 national research and educational institutions are located there, and about 20,000 researchers are engaged in various research activities. Tsukuba Science City is known as the largest science city in Japan.
