Tsukuba has geographical advantages due to its flat landscape and its temperate climate. Also, in addition to being blessed with a rich natural environment, the fact that Ibaraki Prefecture is well known for its few natural disasters and earthquakes makes Tsukuba Science City an ideal location for its many established private enterprises. There are currently “nine different complexes” for research, industrial and business in Tsukuba Science City, all of which have very dynamic business activity. Many of the industrial complexes are surrounded by rich-greenery suitable for experimental research development.

So many corporate R &D institutes are in operation in Tsukuba Science City. Many corporate R&D institutes promote and implement joint research with the national institutes in order to develop new products using advanced knowledge and technologies which the national institutes can provide. In addition, world top level large-scale experimental facilities such as electron-positron Super Collider TRISTAN’s and Photon Factory at KEK, High Magnetic Field and high voltage electron microscopy facility at NIMS can be shared with outside user. Some corporate R&D institutes in Tsukuba have already used the world top level facilities to facilitate their own research as outside user.
