つくば市と東京都心の秋葉原を結ぶ「つくばエクスプレス」（ＴＸ）が、平成１７年８月２４日に開業した。ＴＸの魅力は、つくばから東京まで、最短で４５分という早さである。これまで「陸の孤島」と言われてきたつくば市が、TXの開業により本格的に首都圏の一角を担うようになったといえる。開業初年度の１日平均乗客数は、目標を大きく上回る約１８万５０００人を数え、順調なスタートとなった。開業２年目の平成18年度１日平均乗客数は約19万５千人となっており、順調に乗客数を伸ばしている。
これは、ただ単につくばから東京への通勤通学をするというのではなく、東京都心からも、多くの人がつくばを訪問する双方向的な新線となった結果といえる。一大研究拠点であるつくばへのアクセス路線ということもあり、つくば地域が首都圏のベッドタウンとは一味違うニュータウンであることを実証している。 また、通勤通学に加えて、首都圏からの観光客が筑波山や筑波研究学園都市などに訪れている。ＴＸを運営する首都圏新都市鉄道（本社・東京都台東区）は、東京から筑波山までの往復割引切符を発売している。茨城県も、つくば市内４８の研究機関を巡る循環バスの１日乗り放題の会員証を販売している。

“The Tsukuba Express” (TX), which connects Tsukuba city to Akihabara, one of the city in the center of Tokyo, opened on 24th of August, 2005. The merit of the TX is that it brings you from Tsukuba to Tokyo in 45 minutes. Although Tsukuba had been called "Inland Island", now Tsukuba is included in metropolitan area. The number of passengers per a day in the first year was about 185,000 people exceeding the expectation, and the number in the second year was around 195,000 people and it is still increasing now. This doesn't mean people only from Tsukuba are commuting to companies or schools in Tokyo, but a lot of people from Tokyo are also visiting to Tsukuba. This means the TX is the interactive train between Tsukuba and Tokyo. Tsukuba area is not the same as other bed towns around Tokyo, but is a new town because of its feature, that is that Tsukuba is one of the biggest science cities in Japan. Tourists from Tokyo area visit Mt. Tsukuba or Tsukuba Science City. Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company (Head office is in Daito ward in Tokyo) sells discount round-trip tickets between Mt. Tsukuba and Tokyo. Ibaraki Prefecture also sells the membership card of the one day free tickets for city bus which runs along 48 research institutes in Tsukuba city.

つくばエクスプレスは、茨城県つくば市と東京・秋葉原間（５８．３キロ、２０駅）を最短４５分で結ぶ。ＪＲ常磐線の混雑解消を目的に、８５年に事業計画を決定し、９４年に着工した。総事業費が1兆円を超えるビッグプロジェクトだ。６両編成で最高時速は１３０キロ、朝夕のラッシュアワーには１時間当たり１６〜１２本を運転している。国内で初めて高速列車内でのインターネット接続サービスを開始した。つくばエクスプレスの運営主体は、茨城県やつくば市なども出資している第3セクターの首都圏新都市鉄道。新線の名称は2001年、先進的・国際的なイメージをもつ「つくば」と「速い鉄道」をミックスして付けられた。
東京、埼玉、千葉、茨城の4都県を経由する新線の駅は全部で20ある。うち茨城県内には6つで、つくば市内には、ターミナルのつくば駅のほかに、研究学園駅、万博記念公園駅、みどりの3駅。つくば駅は地下に、他の3駅は高架に設けられる。ＴＸが、他の首都圏の鉄道と全く異なるのが、高架橋か地下トンネルを通る事により、踏み切りが一切ないことと、各駅ホームに可動式ホーム柵を設置し、乗客の落下事故踏切事故が起こりにくく、ダイヤの乱れなども発生しにくい。
また、つくばエクスプレスは、誰でも快適に、スムーズに移動できるような完全なユニバーサルデザインの設備となっている。段差のない床、ゆとりのある改札口、そして見やすく、分かりやすい案内や使いやすい化粧室など、一歩進んだ鉄道を実感できる。

The Tsukuba Express connects Tsukuba city and Akihabara (58.3 km, 20 stations) in minimum 45 minutes. This business was planed to prevent traffic jams on JR Joban line, and was decided to construct in 1985, and started its construction in 1994. The Tsukuba Express consists of 6 rail cars, and its maximum speed is 130 km/h. There are 12-16 lines in both morning and evening rush hours. Also, the Internet service was started, which was the first attempt for high-speed railway in Japan. The Tsukuba Express is a third sector metropolitan railway financed and managed in part by Tsukuba City and Ibaraki Prefecture. The name "Tsukuba Express" was chosen to convey an advanced, international image for this high-speed railway. There are 20 stations on the line, which traverse parts of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Ibaraki. Six of them are in Ibaraki, including four in Tsukuba: Tsukuba Station, Kenkyu Gakuen Station, Bampaku Kinen Koen Station, Midorino Station. Tsukuba Station is in underground, while the others will be above ground. The most different features of TX comparing to other metropolitan railway is that there is no crossing place as the train runs on the bridges or in the underground tunnels and each station have movable platform gates so the delaying by drop accidents and accidents at the crossing place will be less frequent. All the stations have a universal design, so handicapped people can use them easily. You can feel the developed railway service like no step on the floor, wide ticket gate, easily viewable and understandable guides etc...

ＴＸ沿線では既に、計約３２８０ヘクタールの宅地開発が進んだ。つくばエクスプレスの特徴は、鉄道建設と沿線の宅地開発を並行して進めていることだ。「都市地域における宅地開発及び鉄道整備の一体的推進に関する特別措置法」(宅鉄法)という法律がバックボーン。虫食い的な都市化を防ぎ、住みよい街づくりを目指す新しい沿線開発のモデルケースにする。
つくば市内の宅地開発で最も大規模なのは、研究学園駅周辺の葛城地区。県北部に移転する財団法人日本自動車研究所の周回路(サーキット)跡地が大部分を占める。隣接する農地などを含め485haの土地区画整理事業が進行中。完成後につくばの副都心になると期待されている。
万博記念公園駅周辺の島名・福田坪地区(243ha)と上河原崎・中西地区(168ha)、みどりの駅周辺の萱丸地区(293ha)でも区画整理事業が始まっている。センター街区の東側に位置する中根・金田台地区(190ha)の関連事業もあり、5地区合わせて約10万人の計画人口が見込まれている。

TX沿線のまちづくりを進めるにあたり、筑波研究学園都市と沿線の新たなまちの魅力の再発見をしている。その魅力とは、「充実した都市機能」「筑波山麓を中心とした豊かな自然」そして「科学のまちならではの知的な環境」。この３つの資源に加え、東京都心との近接性を備えたまちとして、筑波研究学園都市と沿線地域は生まれ変わろうとしている。
これらの魅力を人々が自由に組み合わせて、住み、働き、学び、遊ぶ。これが「つくばスタイル」。 TXの開業、そしてTX沿線のまちづくりにおいて、この地域ならではの「つくばスタイル」の確立も期待される。

新線のターミナルであるつくば駅周辺はつくばの顔だ。都心地区の広さは200haほど。近代的な建物と豊かな緑が織りなす美しい街並みが整っている。東京から高架線路を走り続けたＴＸは駅直前でトンネルに入り、中央通りの真下にあるホームにたどりつく。
中央通りに面して、バスが発着するつくば交通センター広場、都市型ホテル・コンサートホール・公民館などを擁するつくばセンタービル、デパート・スーパーが入るショッピングセンター「クレオ」があり、近くには郵便局、警察署、美術館、図書館、科学館など都市の主要機能が集まっている。 ＴＸ開業に合わせて、クレオとＴＸつくば駅の間に、衣料品や飲食店などの専門店が多数入居した「キュート」が完成し、賑わいを見せている。
また、つくば市の観光案内所が、ターミナル駅・つくば駅の改札を出た正面にオープンし、専門のスタッフが、さまざまな質問に答えている。
