環境問題を総合的に研究する我が国の中核的な環境研究機関。1974年に環境庁の研究機関として設置。2001年より独立行政法人。地球温暖化、循環型社会、環境リスク、アジアの自然共生などの問題について、幅広く総合的に研究を実施。

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) is Japan's core organization for comprehensive research on the environment. It was originally established in 1974 as a research facility under the Environmental Agency of the Japanese government, but became an independent administrative institution in 2001, giving it a new level of flexibility. Research at NIES covers a wide range of issues, from climate change and sound material cycles to environmental risk and Asian environmental concerns.

NIES contributes a scientific perspective to environmental policy and public administration in Japan. It covers the full spectrum of environmental issues from local pollution to global impacts, responding to the needs of the times in a proactive way.

Research at NIES stands on the leading edge of scientific frontiers and the institute is recognized as one of the world's pre-eminent research facilities in the environmental field. In addition, NIES acts as a hub for international collaborative research on the environment, with a focus on the Asian region.
