農業の生産基盤や農村生活環境の整備・管理、地域資源の管理及び農業・農村の多面的機能向上のための技術など、農村の振興に必要な以下の研究を行っています。

１．農村地域における健全な水循環系の保全管理技術の開発
農村地域における降雨流出や農業水利などの水循環を捉え、農業生産活動とそれに伴って発揮される水源のかん養、水質浄化、洪水の緩和等の多面にわたる機能の維持・向上を図るため、その基盤となる農地・農業用水等の保全管理技術を開発する。
２．地域防災力強化のための農業用施設等の災害予防と減災技術の開発
集中豪雨や台風、地震等の自然災害に対して安全な農業用施設を整備し、食料の安定供給や安心できる生活環境の確保を図るため、自然災害に対する耐久性を向上させるため池等の設計手法及び工法、災害予測及び防災情報伝達システム等の技術を開発する。
３．地域資源を活用した豊かな農村環境の形成・管理技術の開発
農村特有の美しい景観や豊かな自然など質の高い環境資源を適切に保全し、このような環境と調和した農村社会を形成していくため、地域住民の合意形成手法、農村環境の評価・管理方法、生態系保全型水路の整備技術等を開発する。

NIRE performs research in rural development, including technologies for improvement and management of agricultural production infrastructure, community environment, regional resources, and multifunctionality of agriculture and rural communities.

1. Development of conservation and management techniques for sound water-cycle systems in rural areas
NIRE develops conservation and management techniques for farmland and agricultural water that can form the basis for understanding rural water cycles such as rainfall runoff and agricultural irrigation, and for maintaining and improving the multifunctionality of paddy fields in areas such as water purification, flood mitigation and recharging water resources.

2. Development of disaster prevention and mitigation technologies for agricultural facilities to strengthen regional disaster management ability
To develop agricultural facilities that are safe against disasters such as heavy rain, typhoons and earthquakes, and to secure a stable food supply and the community environment, NIRE develops technologies for design and construction of disaster-resistant reservoirs and systems for predicting disasters and transmitting information when they occur.

3. Development of technologies for the formation and management of rich rural environments utilizing regional resources
To appropriately conserve the beautiful landscape, nature and other environmental resources unique to some areas and to form rural societies in harmony with such environments, NIRE develops methods for consensus building, evaluation and management of rural environments, and technologies for improving agricultural water channels that harmonize with wildlife habitats.
