本学は、東京教育大学の移転を契機に、そのよき伝統と特色は生かしながらも、大学に対する内外からのいろいろな要請にこたえるため、わが国ではじめて抜本的な大学改革を行い、昭和48 年10月に「開かれた大学」「教育と研究の新しい仕組み」「新しい大学自治」を特色とした総合大学として発足しました。開学後30年が過ぎた今日、本学は大学改革の先導的役割を果たしつつ、教育研究の高度化、大学の個性化、大学運営の活性化など、活力に富み、国際競争力のある大学づくりを推進しています。学部段階の学生の教育を行う組織として「学群・学類」を置き、学群は中心的な専門領域を基礎としつつ、広い視野のもとに幾つかの学問分野を総合した形で構成し、教育上の視点から、将来の発展の基礎を培うことができるよう配慮しています。大学院には修士課程、博士課程及び専門職学位課程があります。修士課程では、高度専門職業人の養成又は社会人の再教育を目的として、通常の専門分野にとらわれない学際的な教育を行い、博士課程では、専門的分野における研究者の養成又は研究型高度専門職業人の養成を目的として、幅広い知識を基盤とした高い専門性を涵養する高度な教育を行い、専門職学位課程では、高度専門的な職業能力を有する人材の養成に特化した実践的な教育を行っています。博士課程には、前期及び後期の区分を設けず、５年一貫教育を行う研究科、前期及び後期の課程に区分する研究科があり、さらに後期の課程のみの専攻を併せ持つ研究科があります。

Our university was established in October 1973, due to the fact that the Tokyo University of Education, its antecedent, was relocated to the Tsukuba area. As the first comprehensive university in Japan to be established under a country-wide university reform plan, the University of Tsukuba was established with three main aims, namely, to be an "Open University" with "New Systems for Education and Research" under a "New University Administration". Although more than 30 years have passed since the inception of the University of Tsukuba, university reform plays a major role in our continuing improvement efforts. We are striving to create a unique, active and internationally competitive university with superlative education and research facilities. The college clusters and schools are set up as the main systems for education at the undergraduate level. Each college cluster and school is based on a specialized fi eld but is structured to cover a group of similar disciplines to promote further development from the educational point of view. The University of Tsukuba offers master’s degree programs, doctoral degree programs, and professional degree programs. The master’s programs aim to produce professionals with academic and technical expertise and to offer continuing education opportunities for the general public. They provide an interdisciplinary education system that is not divided into typical specialized fields. The doctoral programs serve to create highly specialized researchers and professionals by giving students access to extensive knowledge in a variety of fields. The professional programs offer degrees based on practical knowledge and they aim to produce professionals with superlative abilities in their respective fields. There are several types of doctoral degree programs: five-year consecutive programs that are not divided into separate master’s and doctoral programs; five-year programs that are divided into master’s and doctoral programs; and certain programs that combine the above two systems and have three-year doctoral programs as well.
