筑波宇宙センターは、人工衛星やロケットなど将来の宇宙機の研究開発や開発試験、そして打上げた人工衛星を追跡管制するわが国のネットワークの拠点として、重要な役割を担っています。更に、国際宇宙ステーション計画に向けた「きぼう」日本実験棟の開発や試験を行っており、打上げ後運用を行います。また、宇宙飛行士の養成訓練を行っています。現在、宇宙基幹システム本部、宇宙利用推進本部、総合技術研究本部、宇宙科学研究本部の一部があり、宇宙開発の最先端分野の研究、開発、試験を行っています。

The Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC) plays important roles in developing technologies that are essential for space development. For example, the research and development testing of satellites, launch vehicles, and future spacecrafts (such as planetary probes). Also, TKSC is equipped with the central function of satellite tracking and control network. Furthermore, TKSC researches, develops and will operate Japanese Experimental Module(JEM), “Kibo” of International Space Station. In addition, TKSC trains astronauts. There are office of space flight and operations, office of space applications, part of institute of aerospace technology, and part of institute of space and astronautical science in TKSC.
